A living way to know where we are
Living Clock does not invent time.
It reads the rhythms already happening around us.
The Earth turns. The Moon moves through its cycle. The Sun returns through the seasons.
Living Clock gives language to these movements so we can recognize where we are within them.
The sky is the authority. If calculation and direct observation ever disagree, the sky comes first.
The sky remains the source.
The Clock simply helps us notice.
The Living Clock updates with the sky as it moves.

THE ASTROLABE
The Living Clock began with words.
The Astrolabe gives those words form.
Here, the rhythms of Sun, Moon, and season gather into one living instrument.
What the Clock names, the Astrolabe makes visible.
Same sky. Same rhythm. Another way of seeing.

Waning Moon Reflection

Waning Moon
The Living Clock speaks in five layers, always in the same order:
Sky Arc → Sun Count → Moon Phase → Moons→ Seasons
A full moment in Living Time might be spoken like this:
Light Growing — Twenty-Seventh Sun — Widening Phase —
High Moon — Ripening High Sun Season
That sentence isn't meant to impress anyone. It's not an announcement. It's an arrival.
It tells you where you are in the light of the day, where you stand in the current Moon cycle, what quality the Moon is carrying, what named Moon the year is moving through, and how the season itself is unfolding.
You don't need to learn the whole clock at once.
Even holding one layer in awareness begins to change how time feels.
If you know the Moon phase, you're already orienting.
If you know the season's relationship, you're already orienting.
If you know whether you're in Light Growing or Light Softening, you're already orienting.
SKY ARC — where you are in the day
Sky Arc doesn't read a clock on the wall.
It reads where the Sun sits in the sky.
You can find your Sky Arc four ways: look at the top of this page, use a sky app for the Sun's altitude in degrees, look outside, or measure with your hand.
Measuring by hand, at arm's length: A fist ≈ 10°. Three fingers ≈ 5°. One finger ≈ 1–2°. Near the horizon, each finger between the Sun and the horizon ≈ 15 minutes. Four fingers above the horizon means roughly an hour before it sets. This isn't exact — it's enough to stay oriented.
The eight arcs:
Deep Night — below −18° Full darkness, no solar glow anywhere. Rest. Sleep. If awake, move slowly and quietly. No stimulation, no decisions.
First Light — −18° to −6° Sky begins to lighten, stars fade at the horizon. The most sensitive threshold of the day — what enters awareness here shapes what follows. Wake slowly. Breathe before speaking. No screens. Let the body cross gently.
Sunrise — −6° to +2° The Sun at or just crossing the horizon. The hinge of the day, and where the Sun Count begins. Face the light if you can. Move the body gently. Take the first deliberate action.
Light Growing — +2° to +30° Morning light, long shadows, cool air. The strongest building arc of the day. Primary work. Creation. Focused movement. Build with the rising energy.
Light Full — above +30° The Sun overhead, shortest shadows, peak heat. Sustain what's already in motion. Nourish. Rest if needed. Don't overload.
Light Softening — +30° down to +2° Afternoon, light warming and angling. The beginning of the descent, mirroring Light Growing. Complete. Review. Integrate. Begin slowing.
Sunset — +2° to −6° The Sun at or below the horizon, golden-red sky. The second hinge of the day. Close the day. Reduce stimulation. Shift toward being.
Night Return — −6° to −18° Sky darkening, first stars appearing. The quality of Deep Night depends on how this arc is honored. Dim lights. Quiet the environment. Prepare for rest.
SUN COUNT — your place in the current Moon
A Sun is one full cycle from sunrise to sunrise — not midnight to midnight. The day doesn't reset in the dark. It resets in the light.
Sun 1 begins at the first sunrise after the Dark Moon — not at the moment of the Dark Moon itself, and not at midnight. This keeps the cycle whole.
The Living Clock counts this for you automatically, shown at the top of this page as an ordinal — Twenty-Seventh Sun, for example, rather than a bare number.
MOON — phase and name together
The Moon carries two things at once.
The phase tells you what the cycle is doing right now:
Dark Phase — the cycle has fully emptied. Not emptiness — fertile ground. Reduce intake, speech, and action. Rest. Don't begin new things.
First Light Phase — a fragile new crescent. Resume simple routines. Light planning only. Keep everything minimal.
Rising Phase — momentum returning, coherence before speed. Return to practice. Repeat. Build consistency.
Widening Phase — large and bright, not yet full. The field amplifies — what's stable strengthens, what's unstable becomes visible. Engage. Teach. Confirm alignment. Don't push past what's real.
Full Phase — coherence, not a release point. Gather. Share. Teach. Recognize what's true.
Softening Phase — the descent begins, gradual and not forced. Simplify. Reduce input. Let things resolve.
Falling Phase — release, not purge. Loosening. Reduce. Let go. Sleep more. Avoid conflict.
Return Phase — final descent, preparing for Dark Moon. Go quiet. Simplify everything. Arrive ready.
The name tells you what the cycle is carrying through the year — its tone, not its task:
Rain Moon · the return of water, the ground softening
Bloom Moon · the first visible openings
Flower Moon · full expression, color, expansion
Fire Moon · heat building, energy rising
High Moon · peak of light, longest days
Fruit Moon · what was built begins to give back
Harvest Moon · collection, nothing forced
Amber Moon · holding and preserving, decline beginning
Letting Moon · release, structures loosening
Long Night Moon · darkness expanding, energy turning inward
Still Moon · deep quiet, very little movement
Return Moon · final preparation, everything narrowing
Harmony Moon · a balancing cycle, not every year, used to realign the system
The phase tells you what to do.
The name tells you the tone.
You don't force the cycle — you move with it.
SEASON — where the year is turning
The year moves through four seasons:
Spring Season, High Sun Season, Autumn Season, Deep Night Season.
Within each season, the Living Clock also names your relationship to it — how far into that season you stand:
Rooting — the season is just beginning. Establishing, settling in.
Growing — the season is building toward its own fullness.
Ripening — the season is near its peak expression.
Turning — the season is completing, already leaning toward what comes next.
Season and Relationship together tell you not just which season, but where in it — Ripening High Sun Season reads differently than Rooting High Sun Season, even though both are the same season.
FROM CLOCK TO ASTROLABE
The Living Clock began with a simple question:
How can we notice the rhythms that are already happening around us?
Living Rhythm gave us the answer: observe rather than control. The sky becomes the authority for rhythm, while the Clock gives us a way to recognize our place within it.
The Clock speaks this orientation through layers.
Sky asks: What is this moment like?
Moon asks: Where are we in the cycle?
Season asks: What direction is life moving?
Together, they create Living Orientation.
Then came the next question:
What if these relationships could be seen together?
That question gave rise to the Living Astrolabe.
The Astrolabe is not another way of calculating time. It is the source of truth beneath the Clock.
The Clock translates the relationships into words we can recognize.
The Astrolabe holds the underlying astronomical relationships so those same relationships can be expressed again and again, without each new expression creating its own version of the truth.
A website can read it.
A screen can display it.
A printed wheel can carry it.
A watch can turn with it.
A community instrument can place it on the land.
One sky. One source. Many expressions.
The Living Pattern describes the Astrolabe as the single normalized source beneath every Living Clock, with every digital and physical expression receiving its orientation from the same underlying model.
WHERE THE ASTROLABE CAN GO
The Living Astrolabe is a source, not a single object.
Once the underlying relationships are held in one instrument, they can take many forms without changing what they reveal.
The same living sky can become something personal, something tactile, or something shared.
THE WATCH
A personal Living Astrolabe carried on the body.
The rings become part of a wearable instrument, allowing the rhythms of Sun, Moon, and Season to travel with us.
THE POCKET ASTROLABE
A slower, tactile expression of Living Orientation.
Something held in the hand, turned and explored, inviting relationship with the sky rather than a quick glance at a screen.
THE COMMUNITY DIAL
A shared instrument for a place.
A Living Astrolabe made visible within a community gathering space, revealing the rhythm of the shared sky and giving people a place to orient together.
AND BEYOND
The Astrolabe may eventually take other forms: printed wheels, garden instruments, teaching tools, sundials, and physical expressions we have not imagined yet.
The form can change.
The source remains the same.
The sky is still the authority.
HOW THE ASTROLABE WORKS
The Living Astrolabe begins with the sky.
It does not create a separate system of time. It takes a few continuous relationships already happening above us and gives them a form we can see, turn, hold, and eventually build.
At its foundation are three astronomical movements:
SUN
The Sun's position through the year, which gives us the seasonal cycle.
MOON
The relationship between Sun and Moon, which gives us the lunar cycle and its phases.
DAY
The Sun's movement across the local sky, which gives us the rhythm of the day.
These are the underlying measurements.
Everything else the Astrolabe shows is derived from them.
THE RINGS
The digital Astrolabe is designed as a circular instrument with a fixed NOW marker.
The rings move beneath NOW.
Each ring carries a different rhythm, moving at its own pace while remaining connected to the others.
Moving outward from the center, the developing design includes:
SKY ARC
The movement of the day
SEASONS
The movement of the year
MOON NAMES
The thirteen named Moons
MOON PHASES
The eight visible phases of the lunar cycle
SUN COUNT
The sunrise-to-sunrise count through the current Moon
Together, these layers create one orientation rather than five separate clocks.
ONE CENTER · MANY RHYTHMS
The important part is that these rings are connected without being forced into the same speed.
The Sky Arc moves through a day.
The Moon moves through its cycle.
The Moon Names move through the year.
The Seasons turn with Earth's annual journey.
The Sun Count marks each return of sunrise.
Each layer has its own pace.
Together they tell the full story of where we are.
FROM DIGITAL TO PHYSICAL
The digital Astrolabe is the first working expression because it allows the relationships to be tested, observed, and refined.
The same underlying model can then become physical.
A printed wheel.
A handcrafted instrument.
A mechanical system with rotating rings.
A wearable Astrolabe.
A community-scale Living Sundial.
The important principle is that the physical instrument does not invent its own calculations. It expresses the same Astrolabe model that already exists digitally.
That means the artwork, the digital clock, the mechanical prototype, and eventually the watch can all speak the same language.
One sky.
One underlying model.
Many expressions.
THE MECHANICAL QUESTION
This is where the project becomes an actual instrument.
If the rings are eventually driven mechanically, each rhythm needs its own movement.
The Sky Arc moves once through its daily cycle.
The Moon cycles approximately once each lunar month.
The Moon Names follow the annual cycle.
The Seasons follow the Earth's yearly movement.
The Sun Count follows the return of sunrise.
The exact gear ratios are part of the prototype work still to be discovered and refined.
The Living Pattern deliberately leaves that layer open because the mechanical system should emerge from the astronomical relationships rather than being chosen first and forced to fit afterward. The project is therefore a living prototype, with the digital model providing the reference for testing the physical movement.
THE DESIGN PRINCIPLE
The goal is not to make a complicated clock.
The goal is to make the relationships understandable.
The digital version lets us watch the rings move.
The physical version will let us turn them.
The mechanical version may eventually let them move themselves.
And the community version can make the same relationships visible to everyone gathered in one place.
The technology changes.
The sky does not.
BUILDING THE ASTROLABE
The digital Astrolabe gives us a place to begin.
The physical Astrolabe begins with the same relationships, translated into size, movement, materials, and mechanical connection.
This section is where the project becomes a prototype.
THE RINGS
Each visible ring represents a different rhythm.
The current design explores:
Sky Arc · daily movement
Seasons · yearly movement
Moon Names · thirteen Moons through the year
Moon Phases · the lunar cycle
Sun Count · the sunrise-to-sunrise count
The rings need to remain visually aligned with the fixed NOW marker while moving at their own rates.
The digital Astrolabe gives us the reference position.
The physical prototype will reproduce those relationships mechanically.
WHAT NEEDS TO BE MEASURED
Before gears can be designed, the instrument needs a defined physical geometry.
We will document:
-
overall dial diameter
-
diameter of each ring
-
ring thickness
-
spacing between rings
